Reconciliation

The Sacrament of Reconciliation

Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” And when he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the holy Spirit. Whose sins you forgive are forgiven them, and whose sins you retain are retained.” -John 20: 21-23

The Sacrament of Reconciliation, also called penance or confession, is the means by which a person confesses their sins before God to receive mercy and absolution. The Church requires Catholics to receive this sacrament at least once per year after their first Reconciliation but encourages more frequent attendance to strengthen against sin and receive grace.
